With the death of Yahoo! search I'm getting a little worried that soon there will be only one web index -- Google. Looking around for alternatives today I think I'm already too late.
I tried DuckDuckGo but the layout & colours are all crazy, too crazy for me to want to spend time evaluating their relevancy.
I tried blekko (currently in private beta) but the index is too small atm. Hopefully this will change over time.
Bing should be a strong competitor but I really struggle to understand what on earth they are thinking.
mexican in sydney returns news results about Mexican (people).
Google understands that you're really searching for restaurants.
Search for mexican restaurants in sydney and you'll get a block of ads above all else. Surely when you're the underdog you should be focusing on utility first. Your main competitor shows ads only along the RHS.
Poking around some more I end up searching for ramen in sydney, with pages only from Australia. WTF?!
Curious, I try a search for ramen, again with pages only from Australia.
Wow, it seems we don't have ramen in Australia at all but thank you Microsoft for educamating us on what it is.
So anyway, is there actually a search engine out there that is in the least bit competitive with Google?
